3. Cancellation

What is covered

  1. If your travel and accommodation arrangements, which have not been used and which you have paid for or contracted to pay for, are cancelled before your departure from the Republic of Ireland or UK, providing the cancellation is necessary and unavoidable (and is not a result of mere disinclination to commence your trip as arranged) due to any unexpected event.

What is not covered

  1. Any cancellation of a trip which was booked prior to the policy period.

  2. Any cancellation arising from circumstances which could reasonably have been anticipated at the time you booked your trip.

  3. Any cancellation following your disinclination to travel or to continue with your trip or loss of enjoyment on your trip.

  4. Any cancellation as a consequence of Terrorism including your fear of travelling.

  5. Any cancellation of a trip due to the risk of contracting an epidemic virus/Illness even if the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or WHO or any other United Nations office is issuing a recommendation "not to travel".

  6. Any additional costs or expenses due to your failure to notify the travel agent, tour operator or provider of transport immediately it is found necessary to cancel.

  7. Any charges in respect of the Insured Journey.

    • for which there is no contractual liability; or
    • which are recoverable elsewhere.
  8. Any costs or expenses arising by virtue of the liquidation, administration or receivership of the carrier or travel operator.

  9. Any additional costs or expenses arising by virtue of failure to check in or comply with the itinerary supplied unless due to a cause outside of your control.

  10. Anything mentioned in the General Exclusions.


4. General Exclusions

You are not covered for:

Anything directly or indirectly caused by:

  1. Your suicide, deliberately injuring yourself, being under the influence of drink or drugs (unless prescribed by a doctor), alcoholism, drug addiction, solvent abuse, self exposure to needless danger (unless you are trying to save someone’s life);

  2. You being diagnosed as suffering from anxiety or depression or any psychiatric condition before you apply for insurance;

  3. Pregnancy within fourteen (14) weeks before the estimated date of delivery for travel outside the United Kingdom, and within eight (8) weeks before the estimated date of delivery for travel within the United Kingdom;

  4. Air travel (other than as a fare-paying passenger on a regular scheduled airline or licenced charter aircraft);

  5. Bankruptcy/liquidation of any tour operator, travel agent or transportation company;

  6. Consequential loss of any kind;

  7. Any claim arising from sexually transmitted infections;

  8. Any injury, illness, death, loss, expenses or other liability attributable to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and/or any HIV related illness and/or any mutant derivatives or variations thereof however caused;

    1. war, invasion, acts of foreign enemies, hostilities or warlike operations (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, civil commotion or uprising, blockade, military or usurped power; or

    2. any act of terrorism; an act of terrorism means an act, including but not limited to the use of force or violence and/or threat, of any person or group(s) of person(s), whether they are acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation(s) or government(s), committed for political, religious, ideological or similar purpose including the intention to influence any government and/or to put the public, or any section of the public at fear;

    3. any loss, damage, cost or expense of any nature that results from or is in connection with anything mentioned in a) and/or b) above regardless of any other cause or event or sequence of events or any action taken in controlling, preventing or suppressing anything mentioned in a) and/or above;

    4. you are responsible for proving why this Exclusion, in whole or in part, should not be applied. If any portion of this Exclusion is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of it will remain in force and effect;

  9. Loss or damage to any property and expense or legal liability; directly or indirectly caused by or contributed to by or arising from:

    1. ionising radiations or radioactive contamination from any nuclear fuel or nuclear waste which results in burning of nuclear fuel;

    2. the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other dangerous properties of nuclear machinery or any part of it;

    3. pressure waves from aircraft and other flying objects travelling faster than the speed of sound.

  10. Any payment which you would normally have made during your travels, if nothing had gone wrong;

  11. Failure of any computer hardware or software or other electrical equipment to recognise or process any date as the true calendar date.

  12. Your travel to a country or specific area or event to which the Travel Advice Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the World Health Organisation and/or ETI has advised the public not to travel.


5. Data Protection

You should understand and give explicit consent that the sensitive health and other information you provide about yourself and others in your party will be used by ETI the UK branch of Europäische Reiseversicherung AG, its associated companies, other insurers, regulators, industry bodies and agencies to process your insurance, handle claims and prevent fraud. This may involve the transfer of such information to other countries (including those with limited or no data protection laws).

We have, however, taken steps to ensure that your information is held securely.
